Cities in India have been undergoing tremendous challenges in recent times. Fast economic development and urbanization are posing a big challenge to municipal governance where the fundamental requirements for sustainable development are scientific and feasible planning, as well as, regulated and efficient management. As municipal corporations deal with enormous spatial as well as non-spatial data from various sources, approaching challenges with spatial thinking can help the civic authorities solve tomorrow’s challenges, today. Given the location-based nature of the everyday queries faced by civic authorities, accurate geospatial information can make decision making easy. Municipal processes create huge amount of data everyday, everywhere, which forms the backbone of critical governance decisions. This data however translates into information with the requisite analysis. Geospatial tools like GIS can help civic authorities turn this information into knowledge and actionable intelligence and arm them to addresses issues and challenges including land management, water conservation, public health, public security, environmental protection, property mapping and utility mapping. This not only results in efficient citizen services, but, also, achieving higher revenues. A comprehensive and integrated geographic information system is therefore, becoming essential for smart, efficient and economical municipal administration. From being an operational support tool, it is emerging in to a strategic decision support system.

The symposium ”G-Governance for Smarter Cities” will bring together technology providers, technology users, research institutions, technical agencies and consultants to deliberate upon viable technology solutions to create smarter cities that are ready to meet the challenges of tomorrow.
